In the heart of Sri Lanka, amidst the fervent excitement of the Kandy Perahara procession, an inspiring movement is taking shape – the ZeroPlastic Movement. As the streets close in anticipation of the grand parade, the ZeroPlastic team, in collaboration with local authorities, steps forward to seize this golden opportunity to educate the masses and create awareness about the dire need to eliminate plastic from our lives. Join us as we embark on a noble mission to transform the Perahara premises into a plastic-free zone, promoting sustainability, and protecting the environment for future generations.
The Kandy Perahara is an ancient and cherished tradition, deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. However, in recent times, the excessive use of plastic and its detrimental impact on the environment has marred the purity of this revered festival. The ZeroPlastic Movement aims to breathe new life into the celebration by infusing it with eco-consciousness and sustainability.
True change begins with collective action. The ZeroPlastic Movement has garnered support from The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of the Central Provincial Council, the Kandy Municipal Council, and the Police. Together, we are working hand-in-hand to transform the Perahara premises into a No Plastic zone. By collaborating with local authorities, we aim to create lasting change in the region, setting a powerful example for other festivals and events to follow.
Education is at the heart of the ZeroPlastic Movement. As the closed roads open up for this unique campaign, creative activities will take center stage. The entire crowd will be engaged through interactive awareness campaigns designed to enlighten people about the devastating effects of plastic pollution on our environment, wildlife, and human health.
The success of any movement lies in empowering the local community. During the 10-day campaign, the ZeroPlastic team will work closely with residents and businesses, encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices and reduce their plastic footprint. By involving the community, we hope to create a ripple effect, spreading the message of sustainability far and wide.
The ZeroPlastic Movement doesn’t stop at just raising awareness. As a testament to our commitment, we will actively implement sustainable waste management practices during the Perahara, ensuring that plastic waste is minimized and properly disposed of. By demonstrating how a large-scale event can be plastic-free, we aim to inspire similar initiatives across the country.
As the Kandy Perahara draws near, we stand on the cusp of a transformational journey. The ZeroPlastic Movement, in collaboration with local authorities, will breathe new life into this age-old tradition by infusing it with environmental consciousness. Together, we will turn the Perahara premises into a No Plastic zone, leaving a lasting impact on both the festival and the community.
We invite everyone to join us on this remarkable journey as we bridge the gap between tradition and sustainability. Together, we can pave the way for a greener, plastic-free future – one where our cherished traditions coexist harmoniously with nature’s bounty. The ZeroPlastic Movement starts on 21st August, and we can’t wait to witness the positive change it will bring for the next 10 days and beyond. Let us unite and make a difference!
