PenBin Love at Reid – Writing a greener future at the University of Colombo

*PenBin Love at Reid: Writing a Greener Future at the University of Colombo*

In an inspiring move toward sustainability, the PenBin Love at Reid project was launched through a collaboration between the ZeroPlastic Colombo Community and the Leo Club of the University of Colombo. This initiative aims to reduce plastic waste on campus by introducing specially designed Penbins for collecting used pens, one of the most commonly discarded plastic items in educational settings.

Penbins were strategically placed across six key university locations: the Faculties of Law, Education, Management & Finance, Arts, Science, and the College House. These bins provide a simple, eco-friendly way for students and staff to dispose of used pens, promoting responsible waste management.

Grounded in the values of the ZeroPlastic Movement, the project also focused on raising awareness about sustainability. With active engagement and outreach, students were encouraged to rethink their everyday habits and contribute to a greener environment.

The initiative received strong support from faculty deans, who welcomed the idea and facilitated smooth implementation. Their backing reflects the university’s growing commitment to environmental responsibility.

PenBin Love at Reid is more than a recycling effort, it’s a reminder that even the smallest actions can have a meaningful impact. With each pen collected, the University of Colombo takes another step toward a more sustainable future.
