PEN BIN Love – Eliminating Plastic Pollution from Pens

Did you know that Sri Lanka discards over 100 million pens every year? Pens are often overlooked as a major contributor to plastic waste, yet they are one of the easiest items to refill and reuse indefinitely.

PEN BIN Love is a nationwide initiative to eliminate plastic pollution caused by disposable pens. We have partnered with Pen Mochariya, a social enterprise specializing in pen refilling, to collect, refill, and return used pens at a 50% reduced cost—or donate them to schools in need.

How It Works

This initiative is open to all corporates, organizations, and individuals who want to make a difference. Participation is simple, free, and impactful!

Step 1: Set Up a Pen Collection Box

  • Take any cardboard box and label it with a PEN BIN Love sign (A4-sized printed sheet).
  • Cut a small hole on the side for pen disposal.
  • Place the box in a common area such as a lobby, pantry, or office entrance.
  • Optionally, display an X-banner featuring Zero Plastic branding for better visibility.

Step 2: Encourage Employees to Participate

  • Ask employees to drop their used pens into the box.
  • To make it engaging, each participant can write the name and number of a person they would like to surprise with a gift.

Step 3: Office Engagement Activity

  • Once the pen bin is full, arrange a small gathering at your office.
  • Randomly select three pens from the bin and give a gift to the names written on them.
  • If the name belongs to someone outside the office, ensure the gift reaches them.

Step 4: Send Pens for Refilling

  • Contact Zero Plastic Movement at info@zeroplastic.lk when your collection is ready.
  • We will guide you through the process of sending the pens to our refilling partner, Pen Mochariya, at no cost.

Step 5: Choose What to Do with Your Refilled Pens

Re-purchase them at 50% discounted price for office use.
Donate them to schools through the Zero Plastic National Movement.
