NISD Zero Plastic Community Drives Environmental Change with Green Start Orientation

Sri Lanka, March 27, 2024 – In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, ZeroPlastic NISD Community successfully conducted the Green Start Orientation program. This initiative, aimed at introducing new members to the ZeroPlastic movement, showcased the community’s unwavering commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.

The Green Start Orientation, held at the NISD premises, was meticulously organized by the Green Start Organization Committee. The event provided essential information about the club’s objectives, ongoing initiatives, and opportunities for involvement. Through interactive sessions, presentations, and activities, participants gained valuable insights into environmental issues, sustainable practices, and the ways they could contribute to positive change.

The primary objectives of the Green Start Orientation program were multifaceted. The initiative aimed to attract a diverse group of students to join the club, increase overall membership by 20% compared to the previous year, and retain 80% of new members throughout the academic year. Additionally, the program sought to identify and nurture potential future club leaders.

Community engagement was another critical goal. The program fostered a sense of belonging among new members, encouraged active participation in club activities, and facilitated connections between new and experienced members. It also promoted collaboration with other school clubs and local organizations, enhancing the overall impact of the initiative.

Environmental advocacy was at the heart of the Green Start Orientation. The program educated new members about the environmental impact of plastic pollution, inspired participants to become advocates for sustainable practices, and equipped them with the knowledge to engage in environmental discussions. It encouraged participation in school and local environmental campaigns, contributing to a measurable reduction in single-use plastic consumption at the school.

The Green Start Orientation program achieved notable success in several areas. The club saw an increase in diversity among its members, a stronger presence within the school, and enhanced capacity for larger-scale projects. The program also fostered stronger bonds among club members, increased visibility and support for club activities, and expanded partnerships with other organizations.

On the environmental advocacy front, the program led to a measurable reduction in the school’s single-use plastic consumption, increased environmental awareness among students and staff, and the implementation of new sustainability initiatives. The positive influence of these efforts extended beyond the school, as members shared their knowledge and practices within the broader community.

The organizing committee, led by Project Head Pramodhya Sandeepani Rathnayake and Deputy Head Kusal Madhubashitha, worked diligently to ensure the event’s success. Event Coordinators Ayesha Ranasinghe, Shanuka Pathum, Nirusha Dilshan, and Oneli Jayathmee, along with Photographer Budhdhika Jivantha, played key roles in the event’s execution.

The ZeroPlastic NISD Community continues to inspire and lead the way towards a greener future, demonstrating that collective action and community engagement are pivotal in the fight against plastic pollution.
