KIU University Joins Forces with Zero Plastic Movement to Tackle Plastic Pollution Through Youth Leadership
Colombo, Sri Lanka – [April 19, 2025] – The Zero Plastic Movement proudly welcomes KIU University as the latest institution to join its growing network of university clubs, further strengthening the national youth-led campaign against plastic pollution. With over 8,000 students, KIU becomes a vital new partner in the Movement’s mission to create a sustainable and plastic-free Sri Lanka through community-driven action, education, and leadership.
The Zero Plastic Movement, founded with the vision of eradicating plastic pollution through grassroots activism, has become Sri Lanka’s largest youth-led environmental initiative. Today, the movement is driven by over 12,000 volunteers and students across the island, and its signature initiative — the Zero Plastic University Clubs — empowers undergraduates to take ownership of environmental challenges through hands-on projects, awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and research.
Now, with the onboarding of KIU University, this transformative platform expands further into the academic space, enabling more young people to discover their leadership potential while contributing to critical environmental solutions. The newly appointed student leaders of the Zero Plastic Club at KIU will be at the forefront of launching impactful projects and collaborating with peers across other universities in Sri Lanka.
“We’re thrilled to welcome KIU University into the Zero Plastic family,” said Nishshanka de Silva, Founder of the Zero Plastic Movement. “With its strong academic culture and a student body of over 8,000, KIU adds significant strength to our mission. We believe the new leadership team will not only inspire change within their campus but also lead national-level initiatives that create long-term impact for the country.”
The newly established KIU Zero Plastic Club will focus on advancing sustainability through awareness campaigns, cleanups, waste audits, research contributions, and promoting alternatives to single-use plastics—making sustainability a lived experience on campus.
This onboarding marks a milestone in both KIU’s and the Movement’s journey toward environmental transformation, as both parties commit to fostering a generation of youth leaders equipped to take on one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
