Green Bloom Flourishes: A Triumph for Environmental Sustainability
On June 20, 2024, the ZeroPlastic National Movement marked World Environment Day with an ambitious and impactful project titled “Green Bloom.” This initiative, dedicated to planting bamboo plants, aimed to promote environmental sustainability and was spearheaded by project head Dhamika Wijerathna.The project saw the enthusiastic participation of universities across Sri Lanka, including the students of the ZeroPlastic Club from the Open University of Sri Lanka, who actively engaged in the initiative also organized a bamboo planting event at the Kandy Regional Centre
The main guest for the event was Anushka Bandara, Assistant Director of the Kandy Regional Centre. His exceptional support and unwavering dedication were instrumental in the successful launch of the Green Bloom project. The initiative underscored the importance of bamboo as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic, highlighting its potential to combat plastic pollution and contribute to a more sustainable future.
With the participation of over 110 individuals, including university students, academic and non-academic staff, and a diligent support team, the Green Bloom project turned a collective vision into a thriving reality. The event also saw the involvement of the wonderful children and staff of Supipi Pre School, whose contributions added a heartfelt dimension to the project.
A special and profound thank you was extended to Mr. Anushka Bandara for his instrumental role in the project’s success. His support exemplified the spirit of collaboration necessary for such environmental initiatives. Additionally, sincere appreciation was expressed to all participants whose passion and dedication were key to making this dream a reality.
In conjunction with the tree-planting initiative, the OUSL ZeroPlastic club held a photographic competition called the “Green Bloom Photo Competition.” This competition encouraged participants to plant any tree at their home premises and submit a photograph of the plant with themselves. This initiative aimed to promote individual contributions to the Green Bloom project on a family level. The winner of the competition, Rohith Wijethungam, received a reload award of Rs. 2000.
The Green Bloom project not only transformed the landscape of the Kandy Regional Centre but also inspired individuals and communities to take tangible steps toward environmental conservation. By planting bamboo, known for its sustainability and eco-friendliness, the project highlighted the importance of adopting green practices to combat plastic pollution.
