On the 6th of March 2025, the University of Peradeniya witnessed an extraordinary blend of history, culture, and environmental awareness with Gamunu: A Ballet Drama, presented by the Art Circle of the Faculty of Agriculture in collaboration with ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya. Staged at the prestigious Diamond Jubilee Hall, Faculty of Agriculture, this groundbreaking production marked the first time a ballet drama of this scale was performed at the university, attracting an audience of 425. Gamunu not only celebrated Sri Lankan history through the legendary journey of King Dutugemunu but also highlighted the importance of sustainability, demonstrating how performing arts can be a powerful medium for environmental advocacy.
Through expressive dance and theatrical storytelling, the production depicted themes of perseverance, unity, and sacrifice, drawing parallels between historical struggles and modern challenges, including environmental sustainability. The initiative provided a platform for undergraduates to enhance their creative skills while fostering a deeper understanding of the need for sustainable practices. With 300 ZeroPlastic volunteers and 125 additional contributors participating, the event showcased the power of collaboration between artistic and environmental movements. Distinguished guests, including Professor Barana Jayawardena, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, faculty members, and senior lecturers and heads from the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, and the Department of Fine Arts, graced the occasion, further emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability into various aspects of university life.
The success of Gamunu marks a milestone in ZeroPlastic’s journey, demonstrating that environmental advocacy is not limited to activism but can thrive in arts and culture. By merging history, creativity, and sustainability, this initiative has set a precedent for future projects that inspire meaningful change. The overwhelming support and participation reflect a growing awareness of the need for a more holistic approach to sustainability—one that engages hearts and minds through the power of storytelling and artistic expression.
