“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” – Robert Swan
Sustainability leadership is not just about reducing waste or promoting green habits—it’s about inspiring change, mobilizing communities, and creating lasting impact. The ZeroPlastic movement at University of Peradeniya has embodied this spirit, demonstrating that young leaders can take the reins in solving one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges: plastic pollution. As part of this mission, the Annual General Meeting and Award Ceremony 2024/25 was successfully held on 27th of February 2025, in the Mechanical Engineering Seminar Room, Faculty of Engineering. This event was a testament to the society’s commitment to sustainability and empowering youth to lead a greener future.
Gathering 150 volunteers and invitees, the event was a landmark moment for ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya. The primary objective of the AGM was to ensure a smooth transition of leadership by officially appointing the new board members for the 2025/26 term. This transition is critical for the sustained growth of the movement, ensuring that a fresh team is prepared to take on the challenges ahead and build on the successes of their predecessors. By fostering strong leadership within the organization, ZeroPlastic aims to make an even greater impact on campus and beyond.
Beyond the leadership transition, the event served as a platform to honour the outstanding efforts of the outgoing board members and dedicated volunteers of the 2024/25 term. Their contributions to ZeroPlastic initiatives were acknowledged with awards and tokens of appreciation, reinforcing the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and passion in the fight against plastic pollution. The ceremony not only celebrated individual and collective achievements but also served as a moment of inspiration for all attendees, motivating them to continue striving for a sustainable future.
Adding to the prestige of the event, several distinguished guests graced the occasion, reflecting the growing influence and recognition of the ZeroPlastic movement. Notable attendees included Professor Terrence Madhujith (Vice Chancellor), Professor Ranjith Pallegama (Deputy Vice-Chancellor), Dr. Senal Weerasooriya (Senior Treasurer, ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya), Dr. Kamani Sylva (Senior Lecturer, Department of Engineering Management), and Mr. Ranjith Jayathilaka (BOC Bank Peradeniya, Branch Manager). The event was further supported by ZeroPlastic Movement University Coordinators, including Mr. Kusal Madhubashitha, Ms. Ruwanthika Sadali, Mr. Nadeesha Senarathna and Mr. Malith Induranga, showcasing a strong network of individuals dedicated to sustainability.
A special acknowledgement goes to the BOC Bank Peradeniya Branch, whose generous sponsorship contributed to the success of the event. Their support reflects the importance of corporate involvement in sustainability movements, encouraging collaboration between financial institutions and environmental initiatives.
The dedication of the organizing team and the newly appointed board members was evident throughout the event. Their meticulous planning and enthusiasm ensured a seamless experience, earning praise from attendees and recognition on the official Facebook page of the University of Peradeniya. This acknowledgement further reinforced the growing impact of ZeroPlastic, spreading awareness and inspiring even more individuals to join the movement.
The AGM and Award Ceremony was not merely a celebration of past accomplishments—it was a call to action for the future. It strengthened the ZeroPlastic community, encouraged collaboration, and reaffirmed the society’s unwavering commitment to a plastic-free campus. As the movement embarks on a new chapter under fresh leadership, it carries with it the momentum to drive even greater change. With the dedication of students, volunteers, and partners, ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya is set to make an even more profound impact in the fight against plastic pollution, proving that small actions, when united, can lead to monumental change.
This event serves as an inspiration for universities and institutions worldwide to initiate similar movements. Tackling global plastic pollution requires collective effort, innovative solutions, and strong leadership. The ZeroPlastic movement exemplifies how passionate individuals can spearhead meaningful change, setting a precedent for sustainability leadership that extends far beyond university walls. With continued commitment, creativity, and collaboration, a plastic-free future is not just a vision-it’s an achievable reality.
