International Plastic Bag Free Day is celebrated every year on the 3rd of July. The aim is to encourage nations to start banning single-use plastics. Our world is littered with plastic bags. We use plastic bags when we go grocery shopping because they are cheap. However, the efficiency of single-use plastic bags comes at a tremendous environmental cost and has a severe impact on human health. Several countries throughout the world have begun to prohibit the use of plastic bags, and some countries have enacted legislation limiting the use of plastic bags due to the detrimental impacts of their use.
The Zero Plastic Movement of the University Of Kelaniya launched a poster campaign along with the “International Plastic Bag Free Day 2022” on the 04th of July 2022. The members of the University Movement pasted the posters on the University premises. They exhibited the posters in most public places in the University like Cafeterias, Study Halls, Fruit Juice Shop & Print Shop. Also, they got good support & appreciation from the undergraduates.
As the very “1st Green University in Sri Lanka”, the University Of Kelaniya, the major purpose of the Poster Campaign was to create a University Free of Plastic. So, on that day their first step was taken to achieve that goal. On the University Premises, they informed Undergraduates not to use Plastic Bags & asked them to use Eco-Friendly bags made from Apparel or Papers.
Thank you to all the University Undergraduates & Zero Plastic volunteers of the Zero Plastic Movement of the University of Kelaniya, who have joined in the journey of making the University of Kelaniya a plastic-free university. They are going to carry out many projects for Sri Lanka free of plastic. Let’s do volunteering to make behavioral changes among Sri Lankan citizens to reduce Plastic waste.
