Clean Pera – “Daruwanta Ratak”: A Step Towards a Greener Future

On the 15th of February 2025, the University of Peradeniya witnessed a remarkable environmental initiative—Clean Pera – “Daruwanta Ratak,” a project aimed at creating a plastic-free and pollution-free environment. Clean Pera was spearheaded by the 86/87 Alumni of the Faculty of Arts. This initiative united university students, faculty members, alumni, and local authorities in a collective effort to clean and restore key locations around the campus. Six dedicated teams tackled areas such as Galahandiyawa Junction, Akbar Bridge, Vijeyawardhana Hall, Sarachchandra Open-Air Theatre, University Lake, and Polonnaruwa Junction. Among these, ZeroPlastic led Route 6 near the WUS premises and University Lake, mobilizing 75 volunteers who successfully collected 30 bags of waste.

This large-scale effort was efficiently coordinated by ZeroPlastic’s Membership Development Avenue, ensuring a well-organized cleanup while fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among participants. The presence of university administration, student unions, and professional organizations reinforced the importance of collaboration in sustainability initiatives, with partnerships from organizations like Voice of Hanthana, Rotaract, and the University Centre for Environmental Sustainability. The project went beyond waste collection, emphasizing long-term environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

Clean Pera – “Daruwanta Ratak” symbolized the power of unity in addressing environmental challenges. It served as a reminder that safeguarding nature is a shared responsibility, and with continued efforts, a cleaner and greener future is within reach. By bringing together diverse groups for a common cause, this initiative has laid a strong foundation for ongoing sustainability projects, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier environment.
