Bloom Groot

On June 20, 2024, the Zero Plastic Movement of University of Kelaniya launched the “Bloom
Groot” project in collaboration with the Homagama Samurdhi Bank Society. This landmark
initiative aims to plant bamboo trees as well as promoting bamboo as a sustainable
alternative to plastic. The Bloom Groot project was conducted concurrently with the main
bamboo tree planting project organized by the Zero Plastic National Movement in
collaboration with the London Stock Exchange.

The Bloom Groot project took place at the Homagama Sewa Piyasa premises, attracting
enthusiastic participation from volunteers and staff from the Homagama Divisional
Secretary office. The event was graced by the presence of the Homagama Assistant
Divisional Secretary as the chief guest. The project’s value was significantly enhanced by the
planting of over 50 bamboo trees, with the enthusiastic participation of more than 50
environmentally conscious volunteers.

The Homagama Seva Piyasa area is busy most of time by individuals visiting the Homagama
government offices daily. With this tree planting project, the area will transform into a
greener and more serene environment, greatly benefiting these visitors. This initiative not
only contributes to a more pleasant setting but also aligns with our overarching goal of
achieving a plastic-free society, offering substantial advantages to the community.
