World Endangered Species Day

World Endangered Species Day;
falling on the third Friday of May, is observed annually to alarm us to take action. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about species at risk among the public. The species in peril are commonly known as the endangered species. The IUCN Red List on threatened species mentions that over 44000 species are encountering extinction due to the decline in bio-diversity. A healthy environment is made of a variety of animals and plants. In short, rich bio-diversity is the key to maintaining a healthy eco-system.
“The more diverse the members are, the stronger the team is”. Every species existing on this earth has a specific role to undertake. As numerous species vanished, the balance of the eco-system can no longer be maintained. As one species goes extinct it could stimulate the extinction of another and this loop will continue. Once a species has gone extinct, it is the end. There is no potential substitute for that.
As stewards of nature, we can uphold sustainable practices and conservation efforts, avoid products made using dwindling species, raise awareness, and advocate for change. Every action, minor or massive, adds up to make a seismic impact. Thus, together we can protect the organisms on the verge of extinction. On this World Endangered Species Day, let us raise awareness, take actions and protect the irreplaceable, as friends of the environment representing ZeroPlastic Peradeniya!
